Last Thursday a group of us from Cairdeas went to Newcastle to take part in The Grow Mental Health and Wellbeing coffee morning and showcase. We left the Clubhouse at around 10.30 and arrived a half an hour later.
A Grow representative greeted us and gave us a spot to put up our Penguin in the corner, also a table to display the leaflets and the latest issue of our newsletter. As I looked around I saw several tables displaying various brochures, leaflets and badges. There were also key ring fobs and bracelets with the Samaritans name and phone number on them. We were invited to go into the kitchen for tea and cakes. They were delicious! While the group went back to man the table we mingled with the groups while I chatted to others and gave out some leaflets and the newsletters.
I was introduced to Niamh from Newcastle community centre, a lovely lady full of energy. She told me about the classes that take place there and my eyes lit up when I heard her say that she teaches a Quilting class two evenings a week! I immediately inquired if she would give a demonstration in Cairdeas Clubhouse for the members.
A lady from wicklow library services also said that she will come to the Clubhouse to talk about their services as a guest speaker that might be of benefit to Cairdeas. These events always give an opportunity to meet people from other services and link in with the community.
After a while we adjourned to another room where each group spoke briefly about the aims and goals of its individual group or service. It was very informative. Present included:
- Samaritans Wicklow/Arklow
- GROW Wicklow group
- Newcastle Community Centre
- Wicklow Library
- Kilcoole Mental Health Group
- Social Prescribing Wicklow
- National Learning Network Bray and Arklow
- Bray Area Partnership
At one oclock we made our way to the people carrier and the Clubhouse just in time for a late lunch! What an enjoyable day!
