Blackrock Historic Walking Tour

On 21st August a group of members went on the free guided historic Blackrock walk as part of our Heritage group activities throughout August.

The origin of the name Blackrock was explained. It comes from the lime stone that turns black when it gets wet. Nobody knows exactly where the rock is though.

We were told about the landfill and reclamation of land on the coastline which very few of us knew about. This is where the train line is on the coast now. We learned about the the baths that used to be there and that men and women bathed separately.

We learned about Carnegie library that a rich billionaire was responsible for building it. He was a philanthropist that built many libraries in Ireland including the one in Blackrock. He didn’t provide the books though. Only the buildings.  He was also responsible for the famous Carnegie Hall.
